Eric,
The problem is a common one that I have never been able to completely
eliminate. In essence, the swirl pattern is caused by some type of
oil in the glop, either from the animal matter of the gelatin or from
the pigments.
There are two precautions that if taken will almost eliminate the
problem. First, after the glop has been mixed and allowed to set for
an hour or so strain it through a very fine mesh, such as a paper
coffee filter. That will almost completely eliminate the problem, or
at least it does in my case. Next, and if necessary, try to locate a
bottom opening container that will allow you to pour the gelatin from
the bottom rather than the top.
The oil is of course lighter than the glop and sits on top of it, so
if your pour from the bottom you eliminate a lot of problems, not
only oil but also other particles that are lighter than the glop and
find their way to the top of the solution.
Best,
Sandy
