There is no fixed amount of gelatin needed to make carbon tissue, but
practical considerations suggest that the range is from a low of
about a 5-6% solution to a high of 15-20%. That is, from as little as
50 grams of gelatin per liter of pigmented gelatin solution to as
high as 200 grms. Considerable complications are introduced at both
ends of the range. The amount used also depends on the setting
characteristics of the gelatin being used, its Bloom, and the degree
of relief desired.

I personally use about a 12% solution of 175 Bloom porcine skin
gelatin, with characteristics very similar to the Knox that Vaughn
uses.
