I believe that the surface of the tissue, especially the degree of
reticulation, does make a difference on the final print. However, the
mottling that occurs is only in the highest tone areas (Zone 8, or whichever
zone system you use). I think this is because it is only in these areas is
the tissue tanned to such a superficial depth that it represents the
adherent surface of the tissue, and a quite transparent presentation at
that. I also have some difficulty on occasion with this problem in highest
tone areas and have made the same comparisons with commercial paper. Have
been unable to isolate the factor in this, but from a scientific standpoint
with gelatin, one would probably expect that the operative factor should be
rate of cooling of gelatin when poured on the temp support paper. My
experiments unfortunately do not bear this out so far. J Vee
